The Intelvi Valley Trophy revival

There are races that transcend mere sports results. Competitions that have helped shape the history of Italian motor racing and still today represent a heritage of culture, expertise and passion. The Intelvi Valley Trophy is undoubtedly one of these races, an event which is also part of Stanguellini’s sporting history.

Founded in 1938, the Intelvi Valley Trophy took place along the stunning Pre-Alpine roads between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, testing drivers and cars over an incredibly charming yet challenging route. The race was held until 1965 and quickly became one of the most prestigious events on the Italian calendar, sharing the championship stage with legendary races such as the Mille Miglia and the Corsa dello Stelvio.

Its revival today is much more than a classic car event: it is a tribute to the golden age of Italian racing and to the brands that helped make these races so legendary.

The Intelvi Valley Trophy and Stanguellini’s success

Stanguellini’s history has been deeply intertwined with the Intelvi Valley Trophy ever since it was first held.

In 1938, the competition’s first year, Giulio Baravelli, the Stanguellini Team’s driver, won the 500 category race, giving this brand from Modena one of its first major successes in this event.

Baravelli was one of the most iconic drivers in Stanguellini’s début racing season. Specialising in races for smaller engine sizes, he helped prove how the engineering brilliance and lightweight design of cars from Modena could successfully compete even against more illustrious rivals. His victory in 1938 helped confirm Stanguellini’s reputation as a manufacturer that could turn small-bore cars into undisputed stars of the track.

The following year, in 1939, Stanguellini once again lined up for the event with Giulio Baravelli and Oreste Cortesi, both behind the wheel of a Fiat Topolino modified by Stanguellini, confirming its intention to keep developing and refining its engineering solutions.

Stanguellini continued to feature in the race over the following years with other leading drivers. Sergio Mantovani took part in the race in 1950 driving a 1100 Sport, while Stanguellini returned once again to the roads of the Intelvi Valley in 1959, 1960 and 1961, testament to its connection spanning more than two decades with one of the most popular races on the Italian scene.

Why the Intelvi Valley Trophy Revival is so important

Events like the Intelvi Valley Trophy Revival are worth far more than just the sporting side. They are priceless opportunities to shine new light on an unrivalled era in Italian motor sport, when races were real hotbeds of innovation and roads became the litmus test for the best engineering solutions.

The Intelvi Valley Trophy was part of the same calendar of iconic events as the Mille Miglia and the Corsa dello Stelvio, races that helped forge the myth of the Land of Motors and showcase brands like Stanguellini to a global audience.

It was one of the most prestigious events on the Italian motor racing scene, a competition where manufacturers and drivers tested their innovation, reliability and technical expertise over a route as spectacular as it was demanding. Being part of its roll of honour meant earning a highly prestigious recognition and helping write an important page in Italian motor racing history.
